THE PEPS STORY

It all started with a spring mattress manufacturing factory that came up for sale in Coimbatore in 2005-2006. People hadn’t fully woken up to spring mattresses in South India, and hence it was a purchase decision that posed a huge risk for Mr.K . Madhavan, and his Partners G. Shankar Ram, and P. Manjunath.

The industry at that time was dominated by cotton and coir mattresses with just one player in the spring mattress category. What’s more, customers identified spring with something rickety and uncomfortable, low on durability but high on maintenance and cost.And when they could buy three conventional mattresses for the price of one spring mattresses, why would they even consider it?There were other issues too, the predominant one being people’s belief that sleep was not worth investing! It was an industry with the lowest customer involvement.

But isn’t that what makes the dream worthy of pursuing? Peps Leadership had to invest considerable time in educating the customer right from the sleep positions to type of mattress and the technology and materials that were used to build it. Pioneering a new movement in the mattress industry, Peps went on to cross the hurdles, break the ice and reach out to the customer by highlighting the importance of making everyday sleep a comfortable, healthy and safe experience.

In their first year Peps went on to manufacture roughly 8,700 mattresses; but by 2013-14 they managed to increase it to 1.48 lakh mattresses and managed to spark off a sleep revolution in India.

Today, Peps Industries Private Limited or Peps as every customer calls it, is a Rs.325 crore turnover company, and a leading mattress brand in India, with 600 employees, and 6,000 retail dealers, and a 56 per cent market share of spring mattresses in India.

In the coming years, Peps plans to scale up on its retail reach and offer an immersive experience to facilitate the purchasing process.It also plans to reach out to markets beyond South India and expand to Western markets.
